We support a vast, trusted network of activists and advocates who are leading the struggle for democratic change in their countries. When these courageous individuals are attacked for their activism, journalism, or opposition to tyranny, we strive to keep them safe so that they may continue their important work. The report also features case studies on policy responses to transnational repression in nine important host countries. Since 1973, Freedom House has assessed the condition of political rights and civil liberties around the world. It is used on a regular basis by policymakers, journalists, academics, activists, and many others.

Much has changed in the world since Freedom House was founded in 1941, but much has remained the same, including the lure of isolationism in times of change. Thus the need to protect democracy and to act as a clear voice for freedom remains as strong as ever. Freedom House began with that purpose and today again finds itself called to its original mission. Since 1943, our annual awards dinner recognizes outstanding leaders who have championed freedom and democracy, including His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Winston Churchill, Vaclav Havel, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Hala Al-Dosari, Edward R. Murrow and Bernard Baruch. For more than 50 years, Freedom House has systematically tracked the most pressing threats to democracy and freedom around the globe. We publish detailed research on more than 200 countries and territories, because accurate data and rigorous analysis are essential to shining a light on the erosion of freedom.

Of all the indicators tracked in the report, freedom of expression has fallen the sharpest; infringement on freedom of expression is a key driver of global democratic decline. Over the past 17 years, the number of countries scoring 0 out of 4 on media freedom has swelled from 14 to 33. In the past year, media freedom came under pressure in at least 157 countries and territories, out of 195 included in the report. But since two major rounds of methodological reform (one in 1990 and another in 2006), Freedom House’s numbers have become more trustworthy, reducing past problems such as a bias in favor of US-friendly states. To produce the 2021 report, Freedom House convened more than 150 in-house and external experts to assess a detailed questionnaire about the state of political freedoms and civil liberties in 195 countries and 15 nonstate territories with separate governments (e.g., Hong Kong). Published since 1973, Freedom in the World is Freedom House’s flagship annual report, assessing the condition of political rights and civil liberties around the world.

The House did have a separate border security bill, but it failed to make it out of the GOP-controlled Rules Committee last week. As a result, the border bill then fell short of the two-thirds threshold it would have needed to pass on the House floor under suspension of the rules. In contrast, the $95 billion foreign aid bill made it out of the Rules Committee with rare Democratic support after three GOP members opposed the effort and passed with a simple bipartisan majority on the House floor on Saturday. By equipping Freedom House ambulances with medical equipment, the vehicles were transformed into prehospital treatment centers, allowing for innovation in emergency care. Freedom House paramedics became the first to conduct intubation on a patient in the field and to gather data using tools such as a defibrillator to transmit information to the hospital over the radio while in transit.

Followed by an intensive 30-minute roundtable where we’ll pair attendees and panelists to demonstrate singing/songwriting techniques and answer questions. In the last 15 minutes we’ll come back together and sum up our group experiences. Also announced is the inaugural House Music Parade and Festival at 10 a.m on August 31 in the South Loop, led by Chicago DJ Farley Jackmaster Funk and Delece Williams.
