In 2015, Fearrington Village created its own on-site vegetable garden to provide fresh produce for The Fearrington House Restaurant, maintained by Fearrington’s culinary gardener. The products from the garden are harvested daily and lead the direction of the seasonal fine dining menu. In addition to the vegetables being grown, Fearrington has a separate herb garden. The herb garden is a collaboration between our chefs and gardening team. Fearrington Village features exceptional shopping in the Village Center.

RB and Jenny Fitch were captivated by their stays at Relais & Châteaux properties in Europe and in the U.S. The Inn was constructed in 1986, and in 1988, The Fearrington House Inn and Restaurant became members of Relais & Châteaux. Today, we think Jenny would be pleased to know Fearrington Village is now a certified Bird Friendly Habitat at the highest level by the New Hope Audubon Society. Migratory and resident birds bring life and movement to the many lovely garden spaces. In 1980 when the Fearrington House Restaurant opened, Jenny began designing and installing our gardens. The gardens are an integral part of the life at Fearrington, and it all began with a dream.

Jenny’s Garden is one of the more recognizable spots at Fearrington. Located next to the Inn, Jenny’s Garden is a circle of ivy-lined pathways and white structures leading up to an artistic fountain. The seeds of the gardens were sowed by Jenny Fitch in 1980 when she planted hundreds of daffodils behind the Restaurant. Since then, the gardens have bloomed and expanded into her legacy. And Jenny Fitch came across the Fearrington property and fell in love with the charming European-style land.

For a more casual, yet still upscale, dining experience, visit the bar at the Fearrington House. In addition to the long list of drinks, there are some food options for guests to snack on. However, since membership is only granted to inn and restaurant pairings, the Fitches built the Fearrington House Inn in 1986 and received Relais & Châteaux affiliation in 1988. While traveling across Europe, the Fitches encountered many Relais & Châteaux institutions.

Took my Les Paul in to have the toggle switch repaired/replaced and Phillip was able to get me in and out quickly as I had a short window of time. Honestly, I wouldn't have minded much if he took a little longer as I never get tired of roaming the shop dreaming about my next guitar. There’s few guitar shops that come to mind that I’d take my own guitar to when I need work done. Phil replaced them and made them fit more flush in my guitar again without a tremendous price point.

My guitar arrived in record time and was very well packaged. The guitar was set up perfectly to my request and I played it in my band the very same night. This is now my number one go to guitar store from now on. I just wish I had found them years ago.

At one time, I had as many as 18 guitars when I was playing shows regularly. At VERA Guitars, we’ve pulled out all the stops to give you the guitar-buying experience you deserve. One step inside our airy, spacious showroom, and you’ll feel the difference. And it’s not just because of the humidity control.

Freedom House Human Rights, Democracy & Civil Liberties

Resource and Information Centers managed by Freedom House in Tashkent, Namangan, and Samarkand offered access to materials and books on human rights, as well as technical equipment, such as computers, copiers and Internet access. The government warned that criminal proceedings could be brought against Uzbek staff members and visitors following recent amendments to the criminal code and Code on Administrative Liability of Uzbekistan. Other human rights groups have been similarly threatened and obliged to suspend operations. I wanted to really make something out of the African American studies major. Once I heard about the We Gon’ be Alright class and the Freedom Fellowship that it offered, I was immediately intrigued. I went to one of the info sessions beforehand and felt like I had to do this because I have a job opportunity lined up afterwards to lead me into my future career.

It was among the earliest supporters of Poland's Solidarity trade union. Responding to growing strife in Africa, Freedom House sent study missions to Zimbabwe and South Africa led by Bayard Rustin.. It also sent missions to assess conditions in Central America during the 1980s, as part of an ongoing project to support centrist democratic forces under siege from the Marxist left and the death squad right.

Since its founding, Freedom House has monitored the state of freedom and democracy around the world, and helped shaped the debate on the most pressing issues of our time. Freedom House is a nonprofit organization with approximately 300 staff members worldwide.[35] Headquartered in Washington, D.C., it has field offices in about a dozen countries, including Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Jordan, Mexico, and also countries in Central Asia. Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) on Sunday backed Bishop’s claim that the border proposal was never attached to the rules vote, which makes the rules vote failing irrelevant. But Freedom Caucus members, including Rules Committee Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), defended his tactics and his vote against Ukraine aid. Hollywood producers, including Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Reese Witherspoon, have reportedly also been looking to adapt the book for the big screen. And some of the historically free countries that should be helping save democracy — the United States foremost among them — are actually part of the problem. Alarmed at the imposition of Soviet satellite regimes in Eastern Europe and beyond, Freedom House supported an American policy that was meant to counter Moscow’s expansionism and encourage an American foreign policy that placed the promotion of freedom at its core. Initially, the mission of Freedom House was to counter isolationism, a powerful force promoted by the America First Committee. At the time, ninety percent of American citizens were opposed to involvement in the European war, even as Nazi tanks rolled across the continent and concentration camps began to fill with people. The leaders of Freedom House argued that Hitler posed a grave threat to American security and values. From the beginning, Freedom House was notable for its bipartisan support.

Meet Los Angeles native, Cade Johnson, who recently graduated from UCLA with two degrees in political science and African-American studies. Not interested in the more corporate jobs such as business consulting that some of his peers were, Johnson focused his efforts on community-building and advocacy for those he recognized in his community as underprivileged. Johnson’s passion for the mental health of Black people led him to apply to the Freedom Fellowship summer program as he wanted to learn more about how to alleviate the stressors facing Black workers so they can be fully successful in the workforce. Once a serious candidate for European Union membership, the country has in recent years moved in an authoritarian direction. Smaller investigative news outlets in India have been finding ways to do the most challenging and impactful accountability reporting leading up to the country’s key parliamentary elections in 2024.

Why Journalists in Autocracies Should Report as If They’re in a Democracy

Explore global freedom trends around the world through the Freedom in the World 2024 interactive map. This report was made possible by the generous support of the Dutch Postcode Lottery, Google, Inc., the Hurford Foundation, Jyllands-Posten Foundation, the Merrill Family Foundation, Meta Platforms, Inc., and Robert Tuttle & Maria Hummer-Tuttle. Despite increasingly repressive rule under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), dissent in China occurs regularly and is geographically widespread. The China Dissent Monitor features quarterly updated interactive data on collective action in public spaces and cases of online dissent.

However, in recent years its democratic institutions have suffered erosion. Freedom House was founded in 1941 to rally policymakers and a broadly isolationist American public around the fight against Nazi Germany, and to raise awareness of the fascist threat to American security and values. In the decades since, Freedom House has established itself through its advocacy, programs, and research as the leading American organization devoted to the support and defense of democracy around the world.

Supporting each other in that space, being able to work with people that look like me, and think like me made it all so much easier. As a kid, I was just taught by my family and other Black friends and family members that Black and brown individuals in our country don’t have the same opportunities that white people do. I would always see a Black homeless person on the street when I was very young and know that we had a disproportionate amount of us without homes, especially in LA. It carried on to me assuming that it would be harder for me to get work just because I was Black. “Austin’s freedom relies on engagement with the Syrian government,” Tice said.

We support a vast, trusted network of activists and advocates who are leading the struggle for democratic change in their countries. When these courageous individuals are attacked for their activism, journalism, or opposition to tyranny, we strive to keep them safe so that they may continue their important work. The report also features case studies on policy responses to transnational repression in nine important host countries. Since 1973, Freedom House has assessed the condition of political rights and civil liberties around the world. It is used on a regular basis by policymakers, journalists, academics, activists, and many others.

Much has changed in the world since Freedom House was founded in 1941, but much has remained the same, including the lure of isolationism in times of change. Thus the need to protect democracy and to act as a clear voice for freedom remains as strong as ever. Freedom House began with that purpose and today again finds itself called to its original mission. Since 1943, our annual awards dinner recognizes outstanding leaders who have championed freedom and democracy, including His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Winston Churchill, Vaclav Havel, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Hala Al-Dosari, Edward R. Murrow and Bernard Baruch. For more than 50 years, Freedom House has systematically tracked the most pressing threats to democracy and freedom around the globe. We publish detailed research on more than 200 countries and territories, because accurate data and rigorous analysis are essential to shining a light on the erosion of freedom.

Of all the indicators tracked in the report, freedom of expression has fallen the sharpest; infringement on freedom of expression is a key driver of global democratic decline. Over the past 17 years, the number of countries scoring 0 out of 4 on media freedom has swelled from 14 to 33. In the past year, media freedom came under pressure in at least 157 countries and territories, out of 195 included in the report. But since two major rounds of methodological reform (one in 1990 and another in 2006), Freedom House’s numbers have become more trustworthy, reducing past problems such as a bias in favor of US-friendly states. To produce the 2021 report, Freedom House convened more than 150 in-house and external experts to assess a detailed questionnaire about the state of political freedoms and civil liberties in 195 countries and 15 nonstate territories with separate governments (e.g., Hong Kong). Published since 1973, Freedom in the World is Freedom House’s flagship annual report, assessing the condition of political rights and civil liberties around the world.

The House did have a separate border security bill, but it failed to make it out of the GOP-controlled Rules Committee last week. As a result, the border bill then fell short of the two-thirds threshold it would have needed to pass on the House floor under suspension of the rules. In contrast, the $95 billion foreign aid bill made it out of the Rules Committee with rare Democratic support after three GOP members opposed the effort and passed with a simple bipartisan majority on the House floor on Saturday. By equipping Freedom House ambulances with medical equipment, the vehicles were transformed into prehospital treatment centers, allowing for innovation in emergency care. Freedom House paramedics became the first to conduct intubation on a patient in the field and to gather data using tools such as a defibrillator to transmit information to the hospital over the radio while in transit.

Democracy is on the decline and its not clear Biden can reverse the trend

freedom house freedom

Some of the global slide was driven by governmental overreach in response to the pandemic. In the US, former President Donald Trump questioned legitimate election results, leading to an attempted coup at the Capitol. And in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his allies continued a crackdown on critics. In 2005, the United States was one of the best-ranking countries in the world, with a score of 94. By 2020, the US had fallen to 83 — an 11-point drop that was, according to the Freedom House report, one of the 25 largest in the world. The US still qualifies for the “free” category, but it is no longer at the top of the class.

Its peers used to be Germany and France; now they are Panama and Mongolia. The health of American democracy is in rapid decline, India is no longer a free country, and at most 20 percent of the world’s population lives in a liberal democracy. Freedom House is the oldest American organization devoted to the support and defense of democracy around the world. It was formally established in New York in 1941 to promote American involvement in World War II and the fight against fascism.

It ended up being an amazing class and just an eye-opening experience to the world of organizing itself. Autocratic regimes, particularly powerful nations like China and Russia, are making things worse. These countries have built a network of sorts — what Anne Applebaum in the Atlantic dubbed “Autocracy Inc.” — that enables and supports further anti-democratic regression.

In addition, Goddard's essays on politics and public policy have appeared in dozens of newspapers across the country. The House passed a foreign aid package Saturday as well as what's called the REPO Act, which would allow the Biden administration to confiscate billions of dollars’ worth of Russian assets sitting in U.S. banks and transfer them to Ukraine for reconstruction. With international reporters unable to access Gaza, the burden of telling the story from there has fallen only on the shoulders of local reporters and the regional news outlets working closely with those on the ground. President Trump’s attempt to overturn the will of the American voters was arguably the most destructive act of his time in office.

Certain Republicans blamed hard-liners’ tactics for allowing Ukraine aid to be approved in a bipartisan way in the House over the weekend without border concessions attached. The Congressional Review Act is a process by which Congress can express disapproval of an executive branch decision. If Congress garners enough support in both the House and the Senate to approve the resolution, then they can send the resolution to rescind the rule to the President’s desk.

The Mounting Damage of Flawed Elections and Armed Conflict

The paramedic training and ambulance design standards pioneered in the Freedom House Ambulance Service laid the foundation for standard emergency treatments. These are a few of the sobering conclusions in the 2021 Freedom in the World report, an annual quantitative measurement of the state of democracy globally. The latest findings, released today, show a nearly unprecedented decline in the health of democracy in countries around the world — one of the biggest “we’ve ever recorded,” according to Freedom House President Michael Abramowtiz. In 1997, Freedom House expanded its involvement in democracy support work in a wide series of regions, including Latin America, Eurasia, East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Trump Wants Presidential Immunity — But Not for Biden

New data suggests a worldwide “democratic recession” deepened in 2020, with notable declines in the US and India. The United States is rated Free in Freedom on the Net, Freedom House's comprehensive study of internet freedom around the globe. Explore the latest edition of Freedom on the Net to learn how artificial intelligence is increasing the scale, speed, and efficiency of digital repression. The results from the three areas are combined into a total score for a country (from 0 for best to 100 for worst) and countries are rated as "Free" (0 to 30), "Partly Free" (31 to 60), or "Not Free" (61 to 100) based on the totals.

Freedom House advances the efforts of people around the world to live in freedom and exercise their rights. We do this, even in the most politically restrictive settings, by building long-term relationships with local activists as they promote open government, defend human rights, strengthen civil society, and facilitate the free flow of information and ideas. Freedom House also publishes the China Media Bulletin, a weekly analysis on press freedom in and related to the People's Republic of China. In 2023, Freedom House assisted more than 15,000 human rights activists, organizations, journalists, children and youth, and others at-risk more than 90 countries. Here's how we worked to expand and defend freedom across the world over the past year.

Biden and Democrats Seize on Trump’s Striking Interview

Freedom House's founders were prominent and influential leaders from the fields of business and labor, journalism, academia, and government. A central figure among its early leaders was First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Wendell Willkie, the Republican presidential nominee who ran against President Roosevelt in 1940, was also an ardent supporter and served as honorary co-chair along with Mrs. Roosevelt. Our yearly Freedom Award honors courageous individuals and innovative groups that have made significant contributions to the cause of human rights and democracy.

From 1967 to 1975, Freedom House Ambulance Service delivered emergency care to the Hill District, Oakland, and Downtown Pittsburgh, breaking medical ground by training its personnel to previously unheard-of standards. Its paramedics trained under Falk Fund president Phil Hallen and CPR innovator Dr. Peter Safar. The first medical director, Dr. Nancy Caroline, extended the training program and wrote the first textbook for paramedic care, still in use today. As Freedom House medical director, she often rode along with the paramedics and held weekly meetings to review and analyze calls. Her knowledge and training led her to publish emergency medical service manuals and textbooks used by paramedics worldwide. The 2023 edition of the Freedom in the World report, produced by US nonprofit Freedom House, was released today.

Or if I will actually be able to make a difference and in that moment, I really felt that I was making a difference. Working in the Inland Empire Black Worker Center (IEBWC), I was able to speak face-to-face with and provide support to their pre-apprentices who were going through the center’s job training programs. Extending these types of services to more people and raising awareness for those services, I felt like I was making an impact on the Black jobs crisis positively. In Pittsburgh the following year, Freedom House Ambulance Service became the nation’s first community-based emergency medical service with trained paramedics. It addressed the urgent need for medical care in the city, especially the Hill District, through a strong collaboration between the Maurice Falk Medical Fund, Freedom House Enterprises (founded by James McCoy, Jr.), and Presbyterian Hospital. Freedom House believed that American leadership was crucial if the post-war world were to evolve into a place where democracy was the normal state of affairs, and not an exception.

Only thing that could have been better was to have cranberry juice. Women like this as it helps avoid UTI’s and not as sweet as other juices. When I was going to board, one of the staff members told me that I could not board with my passport bag because it was tree items and I would need to check a bag. So I had to put my things in my pockets, put the funny bag inside the other bag.
